16. Teacher, Wonderful Teacher

I am sure you will agree that some of the most wonderful people in this world are teachers. There is something truly remarkable about individuals who consciously shift their focus away from themselves to uplift others. Every single day, educators step into classrooms not just to pass on facts, but to build confidence, spark curiosity, and offer guidance. Teachers make sure that every student is seen and known. They are the quiet architects of our future, working tirelessly behind the scenes to make their little corner of the world a better place. Their dedication serves as a powerful reminder of what it means to work purposefully to improve our communities from the ground up. Quite simply, teachers are priceless.

If you are a teacher, please know this message is dedicated to you along with my deepest gratitude and admiration. Teaching has become an incredibly daunting profession. Today’s educational landscape demands the impossible, placing unrealistic expectations and a heavy emotional toll on your shoulders. Yet, despite widespread media focus on declining test scores and systemic chaos, your dedication never wavers. You continue to show up, persevere, and advocate fiercely for your students. Your hard work does not go unnoticed. Thank you.

Combating this high-pressure landscape requires a fundamental shift in mindset: taking care of yourself is not selfish. True self-care deserves the same dedication and planning you give to a dynamic lesson or a well-crafted assessment. Remember the gold standard of airline safety instructions: put your oxygen mask on first, then help those around you. You cannot sustain your students if you neglect your own needs. To truly support your students, you must first take care of yourself—you cannot pour from an empty cup.

And that is the core issue facing educators today. Far too many of us are trying to pour from an empty cup. How do we begin to replenish ourselves? I won’t pretend to have all the answers, and I certainly do not want to add another item to your already overwhelming to-do list. I am simply suggesting a commitment to prioritizing yourself so you can show up in the classroom the way you truly want to. Teachers are naturally wired to give everything to those around them, but it is time to put yourself at the very top of your own care list.

What you do to protect your energy will look completely different from what I do, but we can both make self-care a non-negotiable priority. Together, we can reject the toxic idea that taking care of ourselves is selfish. We can also let go of the unrealistic expectation that we can do everything if we just try a little harder. These unsustainable mindsets are driving us straight to burnout—and you deserve so much better. Self-care doesn’t have to feel heavy. It can be fun, restorative, and the exact spark you need to keep moving forward with joy. That is my wish for you. Thanks for reading! kim
