22. Dear New Teacher,

You are exactly who our students need right now. Thank you for choosing this vital, fulfilling profession. It won’t always be easy, but I promise you will not regret choosing this path.

And, please don’t let the mainstream media fool you into a negative mindset about the American education system. There is so much joy and success happening in our schools right now. Pay attention to the news if you must, but never let that critical narrative drown out your passion or change your attitude.

As you build your foundational skills, keep one non-negotiable rule in mind: you cannot pour from an empty cup. Self-care is essential, but self-compassion is what keeps you grounded. Be as gentle with your own learning curve as you are with your students’ mistakes. Burnout doesn’t have to be a rite of passage for new teachers. You can establish healthy boundaries right now to prevent it entirely.

To truly beat burnout, you need to cultivate a healthy workspace community. Find the teachers who love what they do and let their energy fuel yours. It is completely normal to vent occasionally—teaching is tough. However, make a conscious choice to distance yourself from toxic negativity. Stay close to the educators who focus on students and solutions. The ones who celebrate small wins and remind you why you chose to be in the classroom in the first place.

Expect to feel exhausted at times—it simply comes with the territory. However, fatigue doesn’t mean burnout is inevitable. Remember that your mistakes are simply opportunities for growth. Navigating your way to a healthy balance takes time and effort, but the payoff is unmatched. Because at the end of the day, this profession is rewarding in a way no other job can match. Every morning, you step into a room full of young, energetic minds who desperately need you. You get to set the tone, prove to your students just how capable they are, and ignite a passion in them that matches your own. To me, there is absolutely nothing cooler than that.
