Making a Good School Great

Over the course of my career, I’ve had the privilege of working in many different schools. While there is no such thing as a perfect school, the most successful ones share core traits. Let me share some of the common threads I’ve seen that elevate a good school into a great one.

First, great schools have a defined identity. Their mission, vision, and motto aren’t just words on a wall; they are aligned, and the entire community buys into them – from the boardroom down to the classroom. This clear big picture ensures that smaller, everyday decisions always support that central vision. By unifying students, staff, and parents around a shared purpose, a strong identity fosters a deep sense of belonging, boosts school pride, and minimizes internal friction. Furthermore, this clarity builds widespread trust among stakeholders—making it easier to recruit top-tier talent and secure external support—while empowering educators to innovate confidently and creatively within a stable, supportive culture.

Second, a great school never settles for the status quo. Phrases like, “Because we have always done it this way,” find no home in their culture. Just as we hold high expectations for our students, we expect great schools to continually strive for improvement—learning, growing, and evolving every day. While tradition is deeply valued, a great school refuses to let comfort get in the way of meaningful growth, both for individuals and the institution as a whole.

Ultimately, a supportive community, ongoing professional learning, and deep collaboration form the vital heartbeat of a great school. Yet, it is strong leadership that sustains this momentum and breathes life into these ideals. Effective leaders guide these moving parts with clear communication and profound purpose, cultivating an environment where everyone feels valued and inspired. By harmonizing the efforts of educators, students, and families, they ensure the entire school community moves forward together toward a brighter future. In a nutshell, a great school has leadership that enables teachers to thrive. How do leaders do that? By making sure their teachers feel seen, heard and supported. Thanks for reading! kim
